In 2012, Itamura succeeded Tatsuya Oishi as the director of the Monogatari series following Oishi's decision to adapt the Kizumonogatari novels as movies. Beginning with Nisemonogatari, Itamura directed all subsequent televised installments of the series under Akiyuki Shinbou's supervision, and after that left Shaft in 2017.
More recently Itamura has been seen working on Bones' shows, with Vanitas no Carte being his first directorial work there.
