Furukawa's directorial debut was in 2011 on the *Kunihiko Ikuhara*-led Mawaru Penguindrum where by the end of the project he was co-storyboarding every episode.

As a director he absorbed many 'Ikuni school' aesthetic flourishes such as recurring visual motifs with different nuance and stage direction, and infused his own action animator background into his storyboards.
