He studied technical design at Kyushu Sangyo University, where he began to draw manga. Hojo is a mentor of Takehiko Inoue (creator of Slam Dunk) and a longtime friend of Tetsuo Hara (creator of Fist of the North Star). Designed the character Reina, who was introduced in the 2006 movie Hokuto no Ken: Raō Den - Jun'ai no Shō.
