While being an accomplished animator on Guilty Crown and Sengoku Basara, he gained notoriety as an Action Animation Director for Attack on Titan. Imai, together with Director Tetsurou Araki, CG Director Shuuhei Yabuta, and fellow animator Yasuyuki Ebara, conceptualized how Attack on Titan's ODM gear should move in animation, and Imai himself storyboarded and animated many of its action set pieces.
